Now, either a casual listener or a serious collector, you must know how to connect Sonos to a turntable. Learning this has a lot of great benefits.

Analog And Digital

Even though streaming music has dominated the industry, fortunately, the interest in vinyl continues to rise steadily.

One advantage of Sonos is that you don’t have to choose between vinyl and streaming. No, you can enjoy the two.

Apart from the fact that Sonos work with all kinds of digital music services. You can still plug your Sonos directly into your record player. So, you can enjoy your favorite albums right there in your home with Sonos.

For a vinyl collector and music lover, this is the perfect setup. However, it may not be that simple to mesh your digital smart home with analog components.

For instance, a traditional setup is made up of several different components and tons of wires, which can lead to clutter. This keeps many wondering how to connect Sonos to a turntable.

Wired Sonos Setup For Turntable

Connecting Sonos to the turntable is usually the best and simplest setup for casual listeners. In this type of setup, you will just take your turntable and connect it to a turntable preamp.

But, if you have a turntable model with a built-in preamp, you won’t have to do this.

Then, after connecting the turntable to the preamp, you have to connect the preamp or the turntable(with built-in preamp) to the back of a Sonos Play Five.

After this, use the single end of an RCA Y-audio cable and plug it into the line-in port of the Play 5.

Then, gently attach the split end of the cable to the corresponding colors of the L/R audio outputs at the back of your preamp or turntable.

You will need a Play 5 because it is the only speaker that offers a line-in hook-up. There are no choices to make here.

Fortunately, you can pair the Play 5 with any other speaker of your choice after the setup.

Sonos Amp Or Sonos Port Setup

You can as well add your turntable to your existing speakers or stereo system, but, you will need a Sonos Amp or Sonos Port.

You can still use the older Connect or Connect Amp if you already have any of them. However, they are not as powerful as the Sonos Amp or Sonos Port.

Both the Sonos Amp and the Connect Amp have a built-in amplifier whereas the other two products do not.

So if you plan to use any of the two that do not have a built-in amp, you have to connect the output to an external amplifier before sending it to the speakers, unless you are using a powered speaker.

This setup allows you to send the signal from the turntable to a preamp before connecting it into the Sonos Amp or Sonos Port. The preamp can be external or built into your record player.

Finally, the Sonos Connect can function as a receiver. It can as well send the sound signal to all your Sonos speakers.

Just in case you have non-Sonos wired speakers, there is also a way to connect your devices. The Sonos Port and Sonos Amp have outputs on the back made specifically for connecting to wired speakers.

Connecting The Sonos Amp To A Turntable

If you wish to connect that Sonos amp to a turntable, plug one end of the audio cable that comes with the amp into the back of the turntable or the preamp if it is not built-in.

Then, plug the other end into the correct colors of the L/R audio inputs on the Sonos Amp. Finally, you can connect the speakers to the Amp.

Connecting The Sonos Port To A Record Player

One big difference with the Port is that you must use an amplifier to connect to it. Firstly, take the audio cable that comes with your Port and plug one end into the record player or preamp.

Secondly, plug the other end into the correct colors of the L/R inputs at the back of your Port. Finally, connect the Port to your amplifier and connect to your speakers.

Using The Sonos Connect

If you already have the Connect, it makes sense to wire your system using this component.

Otherwise, you are much better off getting the Amp or the Port, depending on whether you will use an external amp or not.

To use the Connect, plug one end of the audio cable that came with it into your preamp or record player and the other end into the corresponding colors of the L/R audio inputs on the back of the Connect.

Using The Connect Amp

You can only use the connect amp if you already have it, otherwise, I advise you don’t use it. The connect amp is the same as the Sonos amp but not as powerful as the Sonos amp.

Thus, to connect it, you do the same thing you do with the Sonos amp. To connect it, use the cable that comes with it to connect the L/R audio inputs on the unit to the output on the record player or preamplifier.

Final Setup

Finally, you connect the Sonos to the app on your phone or tablet. This involves opening the app on your tablet or phone. Then, go to the browse tab and select Line-in, then select the Line-in source.

If you plan to use your record player regularly, then you can set up AutoPlay. This allows your system to automatically switch to vinyl mode whenever it detects a signal from the turntable.

How To Use Your Turntable With Sonos Effectively
